History

In 1982 Aksarben called their ambassador in Ogallala, Nebraska and asked if he knew anyone that could put together a trail ride to Omaha to kick off the River City Roundup. That ambassador contacted Mr. Gary Lewis, rodeo clown and owner of Cactus Jacks Western Wear store in Ogallala. After much thought and preparation, Gary, the Aksarben Ambassador and the Aksarben board ironed out the details and Gary Lewis was appointed Trail Boss. Gary then chose his rodeo clown partner, Steve Schou to be his assistant and thus, the first River City Roundup trail ride was started, making its way from western Nebraska to Omaha. Gary and Steve led this trail ride for the next 25 years, as it grew to over 500 riders. These two retired after the 2006 ride and handed the reins over to the current trail bosses, Martin and Judy Kluthe.

This AKSARBEN Roundup Nebraska West Ride is still going very strong, pardner! AKSARBEN trail riding at its best! So, it is in Nebraska, "Where the West Begins", that we invite you, Cowboys and Cowgirls, to saddle up and ride the sand hill country, where a whole herd of western history was made. You will ride real working ranches; through canyons, across pastures, over hills and across streams. You will get a taste of the WEST, where professional cowboys are still working real roundups, brandings, and cattle drives. You will work up a heap of an appetite and enjoy some of the best cookin' around!

We invite buckaroos of all ages and levels of experience to come ride with us where "The West Begins"!
